The Narada Jazz recording artist struts his stuff on his latest recording “He Had a Hat”. Released on April 3rd, there’s no shortage of attention grabbing intros as well as smooth, soulfull ballads. I believe this album showcases Jeff’s timeless command of the keyboards effortlessly, while taking the us on a fabulous journey through many different musical genre’s; some of which include gospel, fusion, classical music, and contemporary jazz. As an avid jazz listener for many years, I’ve gotten to the point where I can get a feel how the album flows, just as you will. Arrange the tracks any way you like, and you will truly appreciate the talent Jeff possesses. Some of his “Partners in Crime” include some heavy hitters from the likes of Hubert Laws, Randy Brecker, Tom Scott, Russell Malone, Gerald Albright, Kirk Whalum, Chris Botti, and Brian Bromberg – just to name a few.

Now that’s how you begin an album! “Anthem For a New America”, track 1, borders on nothing less than masterful, with the classical music undertones and arrangement; while the subtle drum lines and orchestration are inviting as well as pleasing to the pallet. Follow it up with tracks 6, 12, and 13 and you’ve got some smooth ballads! I thoroughly enjoyed track 12, “Requiem For Gandalph” for two major reasons; Introduction and ecsquisite arrangement.

Jeff stays true to his fusionjazz roots with the title track “He Had a Hat”. Laid back groove lines and up-tempo beats from the accompanying tracks 4 and 10 still let’s you know – ‘He’s still got it’! “Grandma’s Hands”; Wow!! Talk about a trip down memory lane, this song has ‘Old Negro Spiritual’ written all over it! Absolutely wonderful!!! The straight ahead jazz feel come shining through as you roll through tracks 5, 7, and 11. So go ahead, grab your favorite bottle of vino, kick back and enjoy the new album from Jeff Lorber!

This is a must have for the collection!
