Comment on Quincy Jones Hollywood Bowl Tribute Soars Individually Yet Coasts Collectively by A. Hey Patrick, a very good friend of mine praised my piece but also said it’s all but impossible to recapture the magic from the golden era. I simply don’t agree. I see it happen occasionally. And I truly feel that “circumstances” keep ensembles from being as creative and well rehearsed than would yield a satisfying return. They often come so close…. They can read the charts and hit the margins…but they don’t get enough time to take it to the finish line. And they don’t stick their neck out to do things that would really connect to audiences. Q’s music is so rich with drama and emotion. Doing things with sound, lighting or projection could enhance a presentation of this kind so much. But more than anything they need to get their heads out of the charts and put some fire behind the notes. Thank you so much for reading and responding. Respect.
