Forever, For Always, For Luther – Volume II
Rendezvous brings us another tribute from the heart for a soul legend – Luther Vandross. The second installment in the series & more great renditions of the great classics that our brother left us with.
The project starts with Kirk Whalum blowing the sax to “Give Me The Reason”. Everette Harp follows that with “Til My Baby Comes Home”, a real smooth groove. Jeff Lorber puts together a nice arrangement on the song “For You To Love”. Gerald Albright does a beautiful job with the song “If This World Was Mine”, usually done as a duet, but he made it work all by himself. Najee threw down on “The Night I Fell In Love”. He really made it his own with his distinct sound. Jonathon Butler gave his instrumental of “I Want To Be A Fool”, which really sounds smooth like the Butler of old. Kevin Whalum & Maysa teamed up on their version of “There’s Nothing Better Than Love”, a very nice duet.
The vocal performances by Patti Austin “So Amazing” & Will Downing’s “Superstar” were not the highlights of this CD. My opinion is if you do a cover song, you have to come stronger than the original artists & that didn’t happen.. Overall this CD is a must have for all Luther lovers!
