Zapmama – Supermoon
Supermoon is the debut cd for Zap Mama on the Heads Up International label, and
their sixth album in 15 years. Continuing their mix of African continent
meeting the Western world: Incorporating rhythm, harmony and melody to create
their unique sound. Vocalist and founder Marie Daulne, born in the Congo to an
African mother and Belgian father, harbored by pygmies in the forest in the
midst of revolution and raised in the predominantly French culture of Belgium,
is a living map of the world. Utilizing her brilliant songwriting and
performing skills, she creates and weaves a tapestry of music incorporating all
of these cultures.
Bringing together such guest musicians from around the globe: Drummer Tony
Allen; Bassists Meshell Ndegeocello and Will Lee; Guitarists David Gilmore and
Michael Franti; Pianists Leon Pendarvis, Daniel Freiberg and Robbie Kondor;
Percussionist Bashiri Johnson and many more. Daulne blends their talents for a
chemistry of world, soul, pop, jazz and other subtle shades of music.
Standout tracks include the title “Supermoon” taken from a culture obsessed with
superstars and idols. According to Daulne, ”It seems rather foolish for people to
look up to figures who are not very good examples of how to live your life.”
“Go boy” with a beautiful chorus “Ohe Ohe Samangwa.” “Princess Kesia” a song
about the growth of one’s daughter with the lines “bye bye to the little one,
hello to the beautiful girl.”
Supermoon continues with the intricate vocal arrangements that are Zap Mama’s
trademark and never fails to astonish.
