Patti Austin – An Inspirational Holiday
Patti Austin | An Inspirational Holiday By George Strand
Whenever Patti Austin‘s name comes to my mind, a reflection of deeply rooted rhythm & blues music illuminates. A sense, or shall I say, a great memory of classic joys like her classic, ‘Havana Candy’ automatically drift into play. Bring that record & put it aside with numerous albums from years ago (It all seemed like yesterday) and you will have a fortified Diva, a very likable & charming antidote to todays’ music after hearing what Patti gave back in “An Inspirational Holiday“. At the age of 58, Her voice still shines & radiates in just simply 3 tracks.
And you may wonder why only 3 tracks? It may just be enough for Patti. 2 of them featured another once well known name in the music industry – Greg Phillinganes. His mark in music came with contributing alongside the likes of Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker & Michael Jackson as a session keyboardist. He also has a few albums of his own out there, but his session playing days are still intact & it shows on songs “I Really Don’t Want Much For Christmas” & “Lean On Me”, as featured guest.
“The Grace of God” feat. Jim Cox finalized & capped this rather small project with ties to the ever glow of Gospel, while reflecting on traditional values of what Christmas songs should be about – God. An inspirational fitting to what Patti is all about. And that my friends is the certain realization: Patti Austin is good. VERY good. There’s a very few vocalists like her still with us & I personally celebrate her return.
I’d say, these songs are very mellow, peaceful & elegant. Rendered strictly for those who care to have a seat somewhere comfortable with a cup of hot chocolate. Or maybe for a good day drive along the coast. Although there’s not a lot of minutes packed into this affair, the recognition of Ms. Austin should be observed.
Merry Christmas Everyone,
George Strand
