I’m Rick James! | The Definitive DVD
If you would like to take another look at the charismatic career of funk R&B legend Rick James, then his recently released DVD, “I’m Rick James – The Definitive DVD” may be the copy to go after.
There’s really nothing better in the world than to obtain a copy of all of his authorized music videos, 3 unreleased music videos AND some 18 music clips from various TV shows & stage performances, where some of those were both funny & hilarious, as well as intriguing & interesting. It’s one thing knowing that Rick James can get on stage & boogie, but he always carried a precarious personality to go with it. And by the footage obtained for this exquisite collective, your financial investment for this centerpiece may be well worth it.
For one, to see these performances crystal clear & in DTS or Dolby Digital will jam the stereo system & leave a high mark of excellence for concert playback on video. It was quite unbelievable looking at original material in sharp, high resolution images. Especially concert footages coming out from Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert takes of “Mary Jane” & “Hollywood”., where Rick & The Stone City Band took stage.; For a quick minute, a photo of a younger lookin’ Rick James used as the backdrop to an interview with Robbie Vincent on BBC Radio crossed reference to earlier picture comparisons of Michael Jackson &/or Prince. Scroll thru the menu, click the “BBC Interview” track & tell me what y’all think?
It was very interesting hearing Dinah Shore (The Dinah! Show) introduce Rick James out for a live performance on her show to do “Love Gun”.; The funk flavor of the month came expectantly for “Fire It Up”...which of course, jammed the box! “Fool On The Street” recorded back in 1979 will have lovers of the old school R&B & funk flow glare at the set & smile!; “Throwdown” came with it (The Funk) & My Favorite, “Big Time” was the supreme throwdown players….NO DOUBT! I figured it was time to turn up the notch on the amp & get my groove on….past finishing up this review folks. Sorry!
Unbelievable performances! Lots of great color schemes, costumes/wardrobes, an instant flashback to such an impressive career touching off from the late 70’s til now. The new/current music videos may come automatic for some or most of us, but the concert clips on stage was unforgettable! He helped made Motown Records stand Tall!
Before I go….please check out the impromptu performance he gave after accepting an award at the 6th Annual Rhythm & Blues Awards back in 1983, as introduced by actress Lola Falana.
There’s more than what I posted on the DVD. I highly recommend this buy. The only thought missing was additional footage from the days Rick James came to Soul Train, with Don Cornelious, & grooved the party people to the floor! But I’m sure if that was to happen, then you might as well play back ALL of his performances from over the years…RIGHT?
