Flute extraordinaire Sherry Winston brings us a cup of love & jazz with the release on Flying Flute Records, “For Your Love” – a satisfying ensemble of 12 tracks poured onto compact disc for the jazz world to play back. Song after song, Sherry keeps the groove, keeps the rhythm & kicks the melodies into full gear. With years of experience playing the flute, Ms. Winston dabbled into many areas of music. From Latin Jazz to Urban R&B, Contemporary & Modern, this CD is something different, especially with the serenity of the brass flute sounds.

On one aspect, “Caribbean Nights” sits back in the chillout seat. while the next track raises the bar in “Overboard” like a Cancun based, oceanfront patio lounge, latin jazz harmony blaring through the outdoor speakers. An assembly of Flugel Horns, saxes, percussions & flute dominates this composition.

In “Naughty Girl”, much of the smooth overtone changes into a rather urban R&B supplement. Sherry shows she can dabble in that spectrum effortlessly. And I’m sure Beyonce could appreciate the cover of the hit.; “For Your Love” starts off like it was going into the composition hard hitting, but it drifted unto the quiet groove – a vocal duet between Timmy Maia & Lori Anne Williams. Very soft & romantic.; A smooth, contemporary mid-tempo flow ignites the track “Roxanne”, as “Snowy In Paris” takes it back to the chill out, slowdown ballads.

Another mid-tempo’d little funky morsel appears for “Mr. D’s Funky Sweet”. The same goes for “Sherry Love”. These tracks left me this thought – Maybe Sherry should’ve had more urban-centric tracks as opposed to the standard contemporary sounding format.

After “Naughty Girl”, where I thought she did a splendid job covering the well known single, The CD goes a little bit away from there. The CD is a nice consideration when it comes down to Sherry’s talents. And yes, she’s a proven veteran on the flute with some odd 6 CD’s to her discography. I just felt that with a couple of additional R&B related tracks (whether they be covers or originals), the “For Your Love” CD would come out more balanced. The album gets a recommendation, especially for the smooth jazz crowd. But I saw the big possibly….the big ‘could have’s’, if she dropped just a few more urban ticklers in there. Overall, Ms. Winston’s gift on the flute should not go unnoticed.
