Album Review: Sandra St. Victor | Sinner Child ‘at my spheres’ (EP)
(produced by Mark de Clive-Lowe)
By Randy Mahon
We all know Sandra St.Victor from her lead singing duties in the pioneering Soul/Funk band, “The Family Stand”, her stellar solo recordings throughout the Nineties, and her having wrote/performed or co-produce some of music’s greatest names such as Freddie Jackson, Glenn Jones, Chaka Khan, Prince, Paula Abdul and countless others. But this time around, she will soon embark on a new chapter in her musical journey.
On May 28,2010, Sandra St. Victor will release her most ambitious project to date, a 4 song EP opus produced by Mark de Clive-Lowe. “Sandra St. Victor’s Sinner Child”. She will launch this project her own Digital imprint, Strategic Soul Ventures. As we can see, she’s venturing outside the traditional record company sphere, (no pun intended), one of which she was a part of all of her recording career. I commend her for taking control of her own destiny.
First song, the EP’s title track “At My Spheres“, is a techno/funk/R&B track with tribal percussion back beats, handclaps, a strong synthesizer presence. Her vocal performance is as strong and dynamic as ever. Sandra’s runs, her background vocals (all handled by her of course), sound of the seasoned veteran that she is. But this time around, she stretches her vocal chords to a new dimension she’s never ventured into. In Lehman’s terms, Sandra sang her you know what off.
“F.M.A.O.ocity”, is an aggressive track complete with live drums, electric guitar, driving percussions, synthesizer, supplemented with DJ scratching.Sandra sounds just as assertive and energetic as she’s ever been on this track. This song will certainly cater to her die hard Family Stand following. I can hear this playing in rave clubs all over Europe, even the Hip Hop heads could appreciate this gem.
“Cosmos”,we hear the Mack Diva delve deep in the dance arena. The disco feel of this track will you take back to the fun times of true authentic dance music of the seventies and eighties. Once again, it’s live drums, bass synth, atmospheric synthesizer rhythm pattern, and percussions will have those dance floors packed. She scats, sings this true delight like this is her last. Producer Mark de Clive-Lowe delivers a magnificent Mini-Moog solo towards the end. Club DJ’s around the world, here’s one DEFINITELY for your playlists….. and of course, Sandra sings with all the heart and soul she can muster, which is truly not hard task for her whatsoever.
“Cosmos”(Souled Remix), is one for deep house punters around the world. It harkened me back to the classic Chicago house sound that permeated our brain cells during the glory days of dance music. Once again, we hear those classic piano chords that dominated dance music during that time in the nineties. Percussions, droned bass synth, and her lead and background vocal parts are very omnipresent in that it surrounds you with the harmony and drive one can expect to hear from her. Club DJ’s worldwide, download this baby and play it for your audiences, they’ll absolutely love it !!
