Jeanette Harris | Summer Rain
Jeanette Harris | Summer Rain J&M Records By Susan Mutharia
The talented saxtress of contemporary jazz, Jeanette Harris is back in the spotlight with an alluring fourth album Summer Rain. Harris has displayed her skill as a saxophonist in the past with tunes such as “Saxy” and “All I Do,” a Stevie Wonder cover, both from the album ‘Saxified’. Slowly but surely becoming a force to be reckoned with in the jazz industry, Ms. Harris is no stranger to the game. From over the years, whether jamming concert/festival stages across America to publishing quality contemporary jazz projects from her great arsenal of music, Jeanette always leaves the listener with something to think about right after playback of her sounds. A great impression of her skills.
Released on J&M Records, Summer Rain features 13 tracks that are a sizzling zest of compassionate, hip shaking melodies, a mix of funky grooves and tender romantic ballads. Harris takes part in writing 11 of the compositions. It’s also in tracks like “Take Me There” and “Chillin’” that echo her solid talent – a gift that is part genetically coded and part the fruit of working on her passion.
You will be enticed as soon as you hear Harris kiss the reed of her horn in the first track of the album, “Just Keep Holding On,” a writing collaboration with Chuck Cymone. The saxtress not only wants to bring positive vibes to your ear but also wants you to know it’s about love that never falters. The vocal rendition of “Summer Rain” was equally favorable, showcasing the radiant voice of Mr. Joel Bowers as he touches the track delightfully and adds a more soulful flair to an otherwise excellent jazzy instrumental.
Jeanette pays tribute to the late R&B ballad master Luther Vandross with classic slow jam chocolate morsel “Here & Now”. Her touch on the hit single was indeed undeniably & incredibly outstanding. This should be played back ‘after hours…’
Other tracks that stood out: The steady groovin’ “Passing Time”, the head swaying flavor of “Oh so Good”, the latin music flavored-induced “Muy Caliente” and the vivacious, delicious, “Ja’licious” keeps the CD flowing consistently with enticingly, attractive ‘musical notes’ that may deserve an instant ‘repeat’ throughout your listening experience.
Overall, I recommend Summer Rain to those who seek to keep their jazz palette full and to new listeners who are always looking for something different from the norm. Yes, Ms. Harris has done it again.
