Santana – Hymns Of Peace/Live At Montreaux 2004

SANTANA HYMNS FOR PEACE: Live at Montreux 2004

Carlos Santana and his New Santana Band are joined by several of the greatest
jazz musicians of their generation, including saxophonists Wayne Shorter and
Ravi Coltrane, pianists Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea and guitarist John
McLaughlin for this two-disc, three hour show.  The titular “Hymns” written by
such artists as John Lennon, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan and Stevie
Wonder, are described by Santana as “spiritual songs that bring healing and
illumination to all humanity.”

“Just Like A Woman,” “Imagine”, “Redemption Song,” “What’s Going On,”
“Exodus/Stand Up,”
and others are timeless songs and the combination of artists
performing and singing is certainly intriguing however  the performances are
fairly straightforward. The special surprise of Steve Winwood performing the
Timmy Thomas classic, “Why Can’t We Live Together” is a revelation with this
heartfelt performance.

Fans of McLaughlin/Santana’s “Love, Devotion, Surrender will enjoy watching them
perform “A Love Supreme” and “Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord.”  The
assistance from Shorter, Corea and Hancock from the “electric Miles Davis era is
an extra delight.  Special mention must be given to Coltrane for his playing on
“A Love Supreme.”  However, to follow “Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord”
with “ The Banana Boat Song” is just not right!

The concert is beautifully shot and recorded with many excellent performances.
Jazz purists will probably have a difficult time with this program.  However, if
you can enjoy a concert designed to promote peace, love and understanding for
all then give “HYMNS FOR PEACE” a chance.
