Lillian Palmer – Like A Lover

It’s Saturday night at club Copa Cabana, on the upper east side in New York. Anybody who thinks they are somebody, is there, to see the one and only Lillian Palmer.

As the lights dim to a pitch back, just the flicker of the candles remain, the audience quiets down and the M.C. appears on stage to introduce the band led by Grammy Nominated Bill Cunliffe. The lights dim again to a pitch black then the spotlight shines on the microphone stand and Lillian Palmer is introduced. She steps into the light in a flowing white Versace dress. (the crowd  goes crazy) And she starts to sing “The Night Has A Thousands Eyes”. Her vocal style is rich and deeply sensitive and the audience melts to her voice.

Lillian found her passion at the age of eight and by fifteen she was studying classical vocal, then moved onto musical theater. Lillian  also lived and performed in cabaret venues and nightclubs in Italy. After 4 years in Italy she returned to her native California.

Lillian’s latest effort “Like a Lover” is a refreshing sound that takes me back to the days of Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, and other great singers from that era. When music was music.  Lillian’s collection of standards will resonate throughout your house as you listen to “Easy Living”, “The Night Has A Thousand Eyes”, “Midnight Sun”, “Swinging On The Moon”, “My Man’s Gone Now”, “Like A Lover”, “You’ve Changed”, “The Millers Son”, “Golden Thread”, and “My Funny Valentine”, you will find yourself in a musical trance – as the silky sounding voice of Lillian takes you a musical journey.

Like I said before, this cd is a refreshing departure from what I usually listen to, and I think it’s good to take it back to a time where musicians were musicians, and singers were singers.

After the last song is sung, Lillian is greeted with a standing ovation, and she acknowledges the crowd when Marvin brings her a dozen roses.  After tonight the Copa Cabana will never be the same.
