Wayne Brady – A Long Time Coming

Comedian/former Talk show host Wayne Brady engages into a slightly different segment of entertainment, complacent to his career in that industry, with a project in the soul music field called, “A Long Time Coming”. As the title suggests, Wayne possibly had singing on his mind for quite sometime & finally had decided to take the chance of a lifetime to release music that hearkens his love & passion for R&B. After reviewing this great album, Maybe Wayne should stick around & take another chance at it down the road…

Wayne received assistance from production team – The Heavyweights, Jack Kugell, Jamie Jones & Jason Pennock, which foretold the variety of great mixes throughout the album.

Starting with “Ordinary” & “F.W.B.”, the signal Wayne sends is directly after the neo-soul vibe, & something that stuck out to me – real instruments & a little bit of programming. Cool!; “Can’t Buy Me Love” was reminiscent of the earlier slow jam classic hit from R&B group Blackstreet. The original of course penned from John Lennon & Paul McCartney. This track showcases the taste of music Wayne elegantly injects into a palette of beautiful music already planned on the horizon; “Back In The Day” was one of my favorites, especially the title of the song (it’s the same for one of our pages on the website!!) & the message/lyrics was on target. From mentions of the Gerry Curl – the Braids – Hi Top Fade – Friday Night parties & much more! It definitely grabbed the “*” for a minute. Do you still know how to do ‘The Wop’ (dance)?

“Sweetest Berry” is delicately in touch with a simple beat program, while Wayne serenades a lovingly set of lines for the lady in mind; “A Change Is Gonna Come”..again…has been covered many times from over the years. Maybe Wayne wanted to sequence a different mix of tunes to highlight his vocal abilities. Or perhaps mix up the old generation of music to the current. Regardless, he did a good job for the interpretation. “A Change Is Gonna Come” will ALWAYS be a classic no matter who sings it.

“I Ain’t Movin'”, picks up a Motown rhythmic sound & jams a groove reflective of that era. Take a listen; “Make Heaven Wait”, “All Naturally”, “All I Do” & the remaining songs rounds out the complete track listing on a positive note. These tracks mentioned faded into a quiet storming feel, which may sum up Wayne’s overall intentions for his offering. Slow grooves always exposes vocal talents & range. Whether a person can sing on key & hold his or her own. I believe Wayne held his own folks!

“A Long Time Coming” was an excellent debut from Mr. Brady. The productive efforts from his crew along with the studio musicians taking part on this project did a fine job projecting the sound Wayne wanted the world to hear. Is it possible for Wayne to garner a singing career out of this? Let’s wait & see!

It’s, as always, up to you!
