LaTina Webb | Hush
EP Review: LaTina Webb | Hush
Pebbles Of Enlightenment Music
by Susan Mutharia
I watch her as she gracefully walks across the stage and settles in on her position… She is beautiful and elegant. I scope out her hair and her dress, noting her fashion style. I then make a mental note to judge her vocals when she sings. I wonder, “Who is she and how did she get here?” I know her name alright but I know she is more than just a name. The artist she is singing behind tonight glides on stage and steals the moment. Caught between drooling over my fantasy man and the euphoria of the moment, I forget all my questions about the girl…until the final standing ovation. As they bow with gratitude, I rise and wonder, “Who is LaTina Webb?”
Many people recognize her from rendering background vocals for R&B singer Maxwell. Others remember her from touring around the world with El Debarge. However, LaTina Webb is more than just a background singer. She is an artist with her own style, edge and attitude. She is a singer/songwriter who feels that music – heals. Music is a universal language that transcends culture and brings healing. Through music, LaTina aspires to spread love and empower everyone to pursue what they desire in this world as long as it doesn’t hurt anybody. “Strive to be kind to all beings,” she says.
The spotlight is shining on Webb and she is glowing in her video for “Hush,” her fun, catchy and refreshing new single. It serves well to introduce her style: a cocktail of R&B sound with a shot of pop, garnished with rock elements. It was released on the E.P. Hush which also includes the songs “Playing Cards” and “Playboy.” She wrote the songs with producer Scott Elgin. After experimenting with a few different sounds (and encouragement from friend, Keith Crouch), they recorded the song and decided to debut Hush on an E.P. to introduce herself to the world.
Toes In The Sand – or for those who prefer acronyms T.I.T.S – is the name of the complete album with a release date that is imminent! “The title came from a desire to give people a little piece of that dream we all have; to be rewarded for all of our hard work,” explains Webb. “It’s a feeling of summer; the dream vacation that you’ve never had. I want the listeners to visualize sitting by the ocean burying their toes in the sand.”
Singing as a background vocalist has given LaTina a great platform to learn the industry and how to work in-sync with others. I am sure she has also learned ‘what-not-to-do.’ Now the time has come for her to step into the foreground and express herself to the young and wise.
